Laser eye surgery can treat varying ranges of myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and some forms of presbyopia.

Myopia

Myopia or nearsightedness is the inability to see objects clearly at a distance. Myopia occurs when a person’s eyeball is elongated or their cornea is too curved. In both cases, light rays entering the eye fall short of the retina instead of focusing clearly on the retina, which is what occurs with normal vision. Symptoms of myopia may include blurry vision, headaches, and eyestrain.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is caused by an irregular curvature of the cornea. Sufferers of astigmatism have distorted vision as a result of their cornea being misshapen like a football. Images appear blurred or ghost-like because light rays are refracted unequally. In extreme cases, images both near and far appear blurred. Many people who have myopia often have some degree of astigmatism.

Hyperopia
Hyperopia or farsightedness is a condition whereby people may have no problem seeing distant objects, but have difficulty focusing clearly on objects that are close. It is the opposite of myopia in that the eyeball is too short, and light rays enter the eye behind the retina, instead of focusing directly on the retina, which is required for normal vision.
Presbyopia
Presbyopia is the eye’s diminished ability to focus and it is a natural part of the aging process. As the eye’s natural lens hardens and looses its elasticity, a person has greater difficulty adjusting from distance vision to close vision. Presbyopia usually begins occurring around age forty and often results in the need for reading glasses. Presbyopia is not a corneal disorder that can be directly treated by laser vision correction; however, if you have just begun to experience this change and have myopia as well, its effects can be reduced. This is accomplished by intentionally leaving a small amount of myopia in one eye only. The resulting under correction allows presbyopic patients to maintain some near vision. This is called monovision.
