LASIK Facts From The Eye Experts at Hawaii Vision Clinic
Since its inception in the early 1990s, laser eye surgery—known as LASIK—has become the gold standard for correcting vision problems. Ophthalmologist Dr. William K. Wong, Jr., of Hawaii Vision Clinic, has more than 11 years’ experience in treating patients with laser surgery. He understands the finer points of this procedure and shares his insights on what LASIK entails, what conditions it treats, and who is the right candidate for laser treatment.
LASIK is a type of vision correction performed by a laser that reshapes the cornea of the eye to increase vision clarity. It decreases and often eradicates the need to wear glasses or contact lenses. LASIK can treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Since 2009, more than 28 million LASIK surgeries have been performed around the world.
At Hawaii Vision Clinic, Dr. Wong uses the IntraLase® FS, a state-of-the-art laser that painlessly injects the cornea with 15,000 pulses per second. This creates a flap, which allows the cornea to be reshaped to the client’s specifications with razor-sharp accuracy. The IntraLase® laser reduces the necessity of subsequent visits and procedures to continue to fine-tune a patient’s vision.
Many patients will find LASIK to be an appropriate course of treatment for their vision issues. There are some patients, however, who may not be good candidates for LASIK. These include individuals with conditions that prevent their eyes from healing properly, have chronic dry eye problems, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have unstable vision. Those with thin, irregular, or bulging corneas are also not advised to undergo LASIK.
